(I choose to ignore the star system. One of the reasons is that half-stars are not allowed. This book would have been a two-and-a-half star book, not a three star, not a two star, but a solid two-and-a-half.)First off, I am a huge Otis Redding fan. As such, I have read every liner note and box-set essay I could get my hands on. So more than half of this book are stories I have already read before. What this book could have done for me was contextualize all of that for me and expand and deepen my [...]

A pretty standard-issue music bio, with unattributed (and unattributable) quotes, misquoted lyrics, and a telling of Otis Redding's life that is all surface, no depth. I agree with the other reviewers here who wish Redding had been given the Peter Guralnick treatment, but I guess you take what you can get.

This was an excellent story, but it was heartbreaking to know what he planned his next moves to be. I wonder how that would have turned out.

A fascinating look at Redding's life, primarily through the lens of his career. As such, it also offers a glimpse into the musical world around him: Macon as a hotbed of musical talent and innovation, the story of Stax Records, the role that race played in development and dissemination of music. I loved this book. It gave me a lot of information about Macon, Georgia as a music mecca. I like hearing about all the artists at Stax as well as Otis Redding.

I re-read this for the 40th Anniversary of Otis' death. It's an OK biography, however, I wish Peter Guralnick would write a biography on Otis.
