Personally dissatisfied with Balaban's English translations of Vietnamese poetry.

    • Timantha says:

This little gem of literary translation was very fascinating to read! Balaban does a wonderful job of translating in the literal and figurative sense, retaining the awe-inspiring beauty of these poems of the oral tradition and the intriguing nature of Vietnamese rural culture as a whole. The only downside is that it isn't longer!

This is a nice little book of Vietnamese folk poetry. Most of the poems in the book are only a few sentences long. Each poem in the book has an English translation followed a Vietnamese translation right afterward. Although it provides a good sample of Vietnamese oral poems, it is very short and does not go into much detail about the history or development of the poetic form.

    • Allison says:

John Balaban does an extraordinary job of maintaining as much of the original music of the ca dao as possible when translating into English.
